For most people and Samsung alike, a new generation of foldable phones seems to be the main attraction for this summer's Galaxy Unpacked. While I share the sentiment to a degree, I must admit that something other than the next-gen foldable phones excites me more about the upcoming launch event.
I'm referring to Samsung's next-gen smartwatches, if you haven't already guessed. As someone who has worn the Galaxy Watch 5 on his wrist for the past few years, I feel more enthusiastic about the base Galaxy Watch 8 model than anything else to be shown at Unpacked. Here's why.
Don't get me wrong. It's not like I'm not eagerly anticipating Samsung's new foldable phones. I am, especially since they should go through some interesting redesigns. Still, I am not a foldable phone user.
I find the rumored changes to the base Galaxy Watch model more enticing. In case you missed the recent leaks, Samsung appears to have finally redesigned the base Galaxy Watch variant. And after years of nothing exciting happening on this front, any change is something to look forward to.
Samsung has recycled the same design for its base smartwatch since the Galaxy Watch 4. Apart from color differences and a slightly thinner bezel, the base Galaxy Watch has looked virtually the same every year since 2021.
Since 2021, Samsung directed almost all of its efforts toward experimenting with the pricier Pro, Classic, and Ultra models. The company brought a new design for these lineups year after year, all the while putting minimal effort into rethinking the base model.
Well, if the leaks are true, Galaxy Unpacked 2025 will finally change that, and the standard Samsung smartwatch will finally get a bit of love and attention.
According to leaks, the Galaxy Watch 8 has a circular screen on top of a squircle case. Whether or not it will look better than its predecessors is to be determined, but regardless, I can't help but feel excited about this first major redesign in years.
2025 might be the year when I finally decide to upgrade my Galaxy Watch 5 and buy a new Samsung wearable. I've been wearing the Watch 5 for the past two years but never felt like switching to a new base model or spending extra on a Classic or Ultra variant.
On top of that, rumors say Samsung will release not two but three smartwatches at this summer's Unpacked. That's right! According to leaks, the Korean tech giant will launch the redesigned base model, a new Galaxy Watch 8 Classic model, and a slightly upgraded Galaxy Watch Ultra 2.
2025 might be one of the best years ever for Samsung smartwatch fans. Not only will the base variant go through some highly-anticipated evolutionary steps, but the Classic model with a physical rotating bezel will return (albeit also redesigned), and the Ultra isn't going away either.
There are also several new awesome One UI 8 Watch features to look forward to. All in all, it's a good time to be a Samsung Galaxy Watch fan.
