Two months ago, Samsung confirmed that its first XR headset will launch later this year. However, even a year after unveiling the headset, the company hasn't revealed the exact launch date. Now, a new report claims to reveal when the headset will be fully announced and when it will go on sale.
According to a report from NewsPim, Samsung will hold a launch event for the XR headset in South Korea on September 29, 2025. A couple of weeks later, on October 13, the headset will be available for purchase in Korea. Then, its availability will be expanded to “global markets,” which will likely include the USA.
The company will reportedly first guage the market reaction to its headset by showcasing its prototype (Project Moohan) and releasing teaser videos during its next Galaxy Unpacked event in July 2025. Samsung is currently in the final stages of preparation for the headset, which is internally called Project Infinite.
With its new headset, the company will rival Apple and Meta in the spatial computing segment. Apple's Vision Pro didn't perform as per the company's expectations due to a sky-high price tag of $3,500 and the lack of enough tailored content. Meta's market share increased to 77% last year. In the fourth quarter, its market share was 84% due to the launch of the lower-priced Quest 3S model.
To counter Apple and Meta, Google and Samsung will bring smartphone app compatibility to the latter's Android XR-based headset. All Android smartphone and tablet apps can readily work on the device. Some first-party apps from Google and Samsung will have an immersive UI design. The headset features the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor, 16GB RAM, and two Micro OLED screens with a high refresh rate.
Google and Samsung mentioned in December 2024 that they worked together to integrate AI features, content, hardware, and platform at the operating system level with Android XR. The presence of the Gemini AI assistant across the user interface will likley become a major advantage of the headset. It can see what you are seeing or doing on the screen and help you in getting tasks done.
Its pricing and available apps and content will make or break the headset's success.
