Samsung doesn't call its top leadership “Guardians of the Galaxy,” even though it would be cool if it did, but it probably couldn't without running into issues with a certain superhero comic book behemoth.
Nevertheless, the company has taken it upon itself to assemble a powerful team of executives from some of the world's top companies as it seeks to revitalize its core business and pursue growth opportunities in new markets.
It has recently hired Choi Jae-in, a Ph.D. from Georgia Institute of Technology, who previously worked as a director at Apple, as a vice president for its mobile division. Kim Jin-mook, an ex-Boston Consulting Group and Goldman Sachs executive, has been hired as the lead for its Samsung Care+ team.
Samsung is bolstering its health care technology team with the recent hiring of Moon Sung-man, who previously worked at Siemens Healthineers. MIT doctorate-holder Yoon Seung-guk now heads Samsung's Research Robot Center. Yoon was previously a software engineer at GM's autonomous vehicle subsidiary Cruise.
Perhaps one of the most high-profile recent hirings was that of Mauro Porcini, who became the company's first-ever chief design officer. Porcini has had an illustrious career so far, including stints as chief design officer of Pepsi.
The company also hired remarkable talent from the world of fashion, with former Tommy Hilfiger North America president Sophia Hwang-Judiesch joining Samsung as an Executive Vice President to overhaul its global retail strategy.
These new Guardians of the Galaxy have been assembled following a directive from chairman Jay Y. Lee to attract top professionals from diverse industries to improve the company's competitiveness across segments.
