When Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed the company's plans to replace Google Assistant with Gemini on smartwatches later this year, we knew it was only a matter of time before Samsung would announce Gemini for the Galaxy Watch series.
Today, the Korean tech giant broke the silence. It also confirmed that the Watch lineup won't be the sole beneficiary of this shift toward Gemini. Google's new and clever AI will soon be integrated with the Galaxy Watch series and the Galaxy Buds 3 earbuds.
Samsung didn't provide a concrete release date, but we're guessing Gemini will replace the Google Assistant on smartwatches once the One UI 8 Watch update rolls out. When will that happen exactly? Samsung said, “in the coming months.” One UI 8 Watch is already in development.
Of note is that although Gemini will be fully loaded on Galaxy Watches, the AI tool won't run natively on the earbuds themselves. However, Samsung will make it easier for Galaxy Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro wearers to access Gemini on their connected devices, i.e., smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches, using voice commands and pinch & hold gestures.
Once the update rolls out, Galaxy Watch and Buds 3 users can ask Gemini to set reminders, offer weather updates, and even summarize emails. This integration with Gemini should vastly improve the experience for Galaxy wearable users whenever they're working out or need to keep their hands free.
Samsung didn't confirm exactly which wearable devices will get Gemini, but as far as wireless earbuds go, Samsung specifically mentioned the Galaxy Buds 3 series. It could indicate that older earbuds won't benefit from this update. We'll let you know once we find out more.
Samsung should announce the upcoming Galaxy Watch 8 series this summer, but there's no information about a potential sequel to the Buds 3 lineup coming to the next Unpacked event.
