Samsung is working on not one, but two new versions of One UI. There's One UI 8, which is based on Android 16 and we have already had the opportunity to test on several Galaxy smartphones, and One UI 8.5 will come after. This was revealed by a hidden menu for the phone app that comes preloaded on Galaxy devices.
Many, if not all, of Samsung's proprietary apps on Galaxy smartphones and tablets have hidden debugging and test menus that include advanced functionality that isn't meant for the user. Some of these menus also tend to categorize the functionality by One UI version, which is the case for the phone app on One UI 8.0.
There have been rumors before that One UI 8 will be followed by version 8.5, and this pretty much confirms those rumors. Samsung going from One UI 7 to One UI 8 and from One UI 8 to One UI 8.5 suggests the company is done releasing x.1 and x.1.1 One UI updates, though it's entirely possible that this is a temporary change because of how long it took for Samsung to release the official One UI 7 update.
When will One UI 8.5 make an appearance? The Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 will launch running One UI 8, so version 8.5 will likely debut on the Galaxy S26 lineup in 2026. Fingers crossed that it will be a more interesting upgrade than One UI 8 is in its current state.
You can watch One UI 8 in action in the video below. Samsung will probably launch a One UI 8 beta program later this month for at least the Galaxy S25 lineup and possibly flagship devices from 2024. Check out which devices are eligible for One UI 8 here. Devices eligible for One UI 8 are likely to get One UI 8.5 as well.
