After using regular, non-foldable phones for over a decade, I finally got off the fence earlier in the summer and started using the Galaxy Z Fold 8 exclusively. The Fold 8 is my first foldable, and thankfully, it has impressed me so much that I almost forgot my biggest worries about display quality and durability.

Still, those worries persist among people who haven't used a foldable phone yet. Rightfully so. And, to be perfectly frank, independent durability videos you see online can be informative and entertaining but also misleading.

The issue is that it's nearly impossible to convey exactly what the Galaxy Z Fold 8's display feels like, whether you're demonstrating it on camera or describing it in text. Still, I'll give it a shot.

Here are the answers I found to the most important questions I used to have about Samsung's foldable displays.

Almost. It's surprisingly rigid, likely thanks to Samsung's titanium backplate and Flex Titanium technology. Blindfolded, I honestly don't know if I could tell the difference.

The only reason I even doubt it is that the cover screen's glass protection feels ever so slightly more rigid in contrast. And I really mean “slightly.”

In a blind test, the Galaxy Z Fold 8's foldable screen feels as much like glass as any other regular phone. It sounds like glass, too, when you tap your fingernail against the screen.

On a final note, I'd like to highlight the fact that a brand new foldable screen might feel more or less slippery than the cover screen, but a lot of it depends on the user's skin and how oily their fingertips are. Mine felt a little less slippery than the cover screen in the beginning, but now I can't tell the difference.

Not really. The obvious reason is that it folds — something rigid glass can't do before shattering. However, there's a little bit more to unpack here.

The fingernail test can help us highlight the most important aspect: There's a big difference between dragging your fingernail across the foldable screen and tapping the screen with your fingernail. One has consequences; the other does not.

I mentioned earlier that the Galaxy Z Fold 8's foldable screen feels and sounds like glass when you tap it with your fingernail. I did that countless times, intentionally or by accident in the heat of an online game, without ever fearing I might damage the screen.

Here's the kicker. The foldable screen behaves less like glass and much more like plastic when you drag — rather than tap — your fingernail across it.

Scratching your screen with your fingernail is something you should never do, as it will leave a permanent mark on your display. I only did this as a test before writing this article, but I strongly advise against it.

Nevertheless, I really want to highlight that I had to go out of my way for this test. I never left a permanent mark on my foldable screen in my three months of use so far. It's only after someone else told me about the fingernail marks that I even started paying attention to this (non)issue.

In short, I used to be most worried about fingernail marks on foldable screens, but I'd argue that reality is far different from what is usually presented in durability videos. I'll never dig my fingernails into my foldable display again.

Is it impossible to damage your foldable screen with your fingernail if you really try? Definitely not, but you have to make a conscious decision about it. Do I fear I'll damage my Galaxy Z Fold 8 by accident using my fingernail? Not one bit.

Ironically, now that I've used the Fold 8 as a daily driver, fingernail marks have become the least of my concerns.

Samsung's crease is almost invisible, or at the very least, it's hidden enough that it never bothers me.

Visually, the image is ever so slightly warped across the crease area, but you'd have to look very carefully to even notice.

In fact, I'd argue that Samsung's Edge curved displays were far more distorted and annoying than the crease. That's not even a contest.

But what does it feel like to drag your fingertip across the crease? Can you actually feel it? Yes, you can, and I wish that weren't the case, but it's not as bad as I imagined.

We have to keep in mind the simple fact that fingertips are among the most tactile parts of the human body. Tiny details feel oversized, and if you close your eyes while dragging your fingertip across the crease, the feeling is magnified.

Is it an annoyance? Not for me; it isn't. Obviously, I'd rather have no crease at all than a little bit of crease, but the current implementation doesn't get in my way. I never feel constantly reminded about the crease when I use my Fold 8.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 convinced me that many of my past worries were perhaps exaggerated. Or, at the very least, it convinced me that Samsung's foldable display technology has advanced to a point where I no longer need to be as cautious as I used to.

Nevertheless, there are a couple of issues, or worries, I'd like to highlight, even though they're nothing major.

Protective layer doesn't go edge-to-edge

The first is that the foldable screen’s outer protective layer doesn’t extend all the way to the edges of the screen. The gap is small and close enough to the screen’s bezels that you won’t feel it.

However, dust particles can gather around those edges, and I always have to be extra careful when cleaning my foldable screen.

A cotton swab can do the trick, but there's no denying that the Fold 8 requires a bit of extra maintenance if you want to keep it clean.

I've scratched my Galaxy Z Fold 8's screen already

Realistically, the only worry I have is accidentally scratching the Fold 8's foldable screen when I clean it. I've already done that and learned my lesson.

I tend to keep my electronics free of fingerprints and dust. I don't like grease building up on my screen (or keyboards and controllers), so I wipe my phones with a soft cloth relatively often.

With the Galaxy Z Fold 8, I have to be extra careful. Any particle trapped between the screen and your soft cloth can leave a mark. I know that first-hand.

Here's a short story: I was out in the park one day, sitting on a bench and playing a mobile game on the Fold 8's big screen. It was a bit windy outside, so a few dust and pollen particles got stuck to the foldable display.

I carefully wiped the dust and pollen off my Fold 8's screen with a soft cloth, only to realize my mistake moments later. I forgot that the foldable panel isn't as scratch-resistant as rigid ones, so I left a tiny micro-scratch across the crease.

Thankfully, it's invisible unless I use a blank, bright wallpaper. And I've learned my lesson. Every time I want to wipe my Galaxy Z Fold 8's foldable screen, I try to blow the bigger particles away first.

I can't speak for everyone, as everyone has different expectations. But in my experience, the Galaxy Z Fold 8's foldable screen has been far less of a concern than I expected it to be.

I wish there were an easier way for more people to experience Samsung's latest foldables before drawing conclusions based on durability videos that are meant to push the limits, or based on social media posts designed to spark controversy. If you're curious, you can always visit a Samsung store.

I'm extremely happy with my Fold 8, and while it's not flawless or indestructible, the foldable screen surpassed my expectations. I can only hope that every Galaxy Z Fold 8 user out there feels the same, and that my experience will help you get a better understanding of Samsung's foldable phone experience in 2026.
