Through ramping up its sustainability and recycling efforts since 2009, Samsung recently surpassed its goal of reusing 500,000 tons of recycled plastics in its products before 2030. Today, on World Environment Day, Samsung revealed it has reused more than 567,000 tons, far exceeding its initial expectations.
Samsung now aims to cut plastic packaging for smartphones entirely by the end of 2025. In addition, the company is now reaching out to its customers who want to do their part and lower their plastic waste. Samsung shared four practical tips to achieve this goal.
Galaxy smartphone and tablet users can leverage Samsung's extended software support policy and the company's Customer Care network to use devices for longer. Repairing a damaged device through an authorized Samsung service center instead of buying a new one can lower waste.
Another tip Samsung has for smartphone users is to expand their search if they need to buy a new device. If you're looking to upgrade your phone, consider the Certified Re-Newed program. Through it, Samsung offers Re-Newed devices, like the Galaxy S24, which already employ components manufactured from recycled plastics, glass, and aluminum. Unfortunately, the Certified Re-Newed program is not available everywhere.
Thirdly, if you have a Samsung washing machine that supports the Less Microfiber Filter, consider using it. Microplastics released during laundry are a grave concern, but Samsung has been working on clever solutions. The Bespoke AI Laundry Vented Combo reduces microfiber release by 39%, while the Less Microfiber Filter prevents up to 98% of microplastics released during laundry from reaching our oceans.
The fourth and last tip Samsung shared today concerns the environmental impact of used batteries. If you want to throw away fewer depleted batteries into the bin, consider solar power. In 2021, Samsung introduced the SolarCell Remote for select TVs. It is equipped with a rechargeable battery that can be refueled either through a USB-C port or its embedded solar cell.
It would be great if Samsung could ship every TV with the SolarCell Remote, but that's not the case. However, you can buy this remote for $59 if you want to lower your used battery waste. It is compatible with various QLED, OLED, Neo QLED, Crystal, and UHD lineups.
That wraps up Samsung's list of tips for people who would like to reduce plastic waste and continue to use the best Samsung products. Do any of them apply to you?
