In an interview with CNN after last week's Unpacked event, the COO of Samsung's Mobile eXperience (MX) division revealed some of the company's more fringe ideas regarding the future of mobile and wearable devices.
Woo-Joon Choi told the publication that Samsung is considering a wide variety of AI-powered devices and form factors, including smart jewelry. He mentioned that the industry could transform and create devices that we wear rather than carry, such as smart glasses, earrings, and necklaces.
According to the COO, Samsung believes that the evolution of AI could lead to the development of new categories of devices that may enable new user interaction models.
These wearable devices could complement smartphones or sometimes even replace them, allowing users to get things done not by having to rely on their handsets but instead by interacting with their smart wearables.
We believe it should be wearable, something that you shouldn't carry […]. So it could be something that you wear.
Mr. Choi also said that Samsung is “looking at all kinds of possibilities” regarding the development of new AI-powered wearable devices.
Samsung has already developed several Galaxy smartwatches and one Galaxy Ring. The company is also working on a new XR (eXtended Reality) headset that could go on sale this year or the next.
Speaking of the latter, the COO said that although “we are actively working on glasses, […] some people do not want to wear glasses because they change their look.” As such, Samsung is also “exploring other types of devices.”
It sounds like Samsung believes that smart devices could take more diverse form factors as AI becomes more advanced. We might not always be bound to our smartphones, and eventually, we might substitute or at least complement smartphones with other types of wearables.
It could be something that you wear, glasses, earrings, watches, rings and sometimes (a) necklace.
This doesn't mean Samsung is actively working on new wearable devices as we speak. For now, Samsung appears to be focused on its smartwatches, the Galaxy Ring sequel, and the upcoming Galaxy XR.
However, the future enabled by AI could eventually allow Samsung to explore new smart device ideas that may allow us to do things quicker without looking at screens. Smart jewelry could gain a lot more popularity in the age of AI.
Last week at Galaxy Unpacked in New York, Samsung announced the Galaxy Watch 8, the Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, and the refreshed Galaxy Watch Ultra (2025). All three smartwatches run the latest One UI 8 Watch update featuring enhanced AI features and Google Gemini integration.
