Samsung Display has announced that it has developed a new display film called QuantumBlack for QD-OLED monitors. This film not only reduces reflections but also improves durability compared to previous-generation QD-OLED panels. Several monitor brands will adopt it soon.

The QuantumBlack film is claimed to reduce light reflections by 20 percent compared to Samsung Display’s earlier QD-OLED film. It also increases panel surface hardness from 2H to 3H on the Mohs hardness scale, which is commonly used for display durability testing. This improvement means the screen is more resistant to minor scratches, such as those caused by fingernails.

The new coating will be used in upcoming QD-OLED monitors from brands like ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, and likely Samsung itself. ASUS markets this technology as ‘Black Shield,' while Gigabyte refers to it as ‘Obsidian Shield.' MSI uses the name ‘Dark Armor' for its implementation of the same coating.

Demand for OLED and QD-OLED monitors continues to grow. According to market research firm Omdia, the self-emissive display market is projected to expand from 3.4 million units in 2025 to 7.6 million units by 2030, highlighting strong momentum in this segment.
