After namedropping the Exynos 2500 chip last year, Samsung appears ready to launch its first 3nm smartphone chip next month. The upcoming chip is expected to debut with the Galaxy Z Flip 7, and the South Korean firm has now confirmed that it features satellite connectivity for emergency messaging, thanks to its Exynos 5400 5G modem with NB-IoT NTN connectivity with low-earth orbit satellites.
Today, Skylo Technologies, a global provider of Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) services, announced that it is taking forward its partnership with Samsung with the certification of its new Exynos 2500 chip. The company said this new chip offers higher performance and better energy efficiency. It features the same Exynos 5400 5G modem that was used in the Exynos 2400 processor that debuted with the Galaxy S24 series.
The company's official revealed in a statement that the Exynos 2500 processor will be used in mainstream devices worldwide and will be able to connect to satellites wherever conventional cellular networks are unavailable. This capability offers connectivity in remote areas, which could be useful for emergency situations.
Skylo is also working with Samsung subsidiary Harman Automotive to bring bidirectional emergency messaging directly to HARMAN Ready Connect telematics control unit (TCU). This feature will allow connected automobiles to send emergency alerts and receive real-time updates when traditional cellular coverage isn't available.
Hui Won Je, VP of Modem Development Team at Samsung Electronics, said, “Samsung’s partnership with Skylo is built upon 3GPP NTN standards to unlock connectivity everywhere. Through our collaboration on the Samsung Exynos Modem 5400 and the Exynos 2500 mobile processor, mainstream devices worldwide will now have the underlying technology to connect to satellites wherever cellular networks are unavailable, ushering in a new era of ubiquitous connectivity.“
Even though the Exynos 2500 features satellite connectivity, it is possible that Samsung might not use that feature due to various business reasons.
The Exynos 2500 is the company's first 3nm chip designed for smartphones. It was expected to debut with the Galaxy S25 series earlier this year. However, according to reports, Samsung Foundry couldn't hit the necessary chip yields in the required time. So, Samsung MX had to exclusively use the Snapdragon 8 Elite For Galaxy chip in all Galaxy S25 series phones launched this year. Now, the company seems to have improved yields and is ready to equip the Galaxy Z Flip 7 with the Exynos 2500.
Samsung has already started teasing its next-generation foldable phones, which include the Galaxy Z Flip 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, and the Galaxy Z Fold 7. While the Galaxy Z Flip 7 uses the Exynos 2500, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE will come equipped with the Exynos 2400 processor. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 has been confirmed to feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chip.
