The European Union has forced Apple to do a lot of things that it never wanted to do, such as replace the proprietary port on its mobile devices to USB-C, open up its operating system to third-party app stores, and now, it may force Apple to let users choose an alternative voice assistant to Siri.
This move could take away Samsung's Gemini AI edge. Samsung Galaxy devices rely on Google's Gemini AI to do much of the heavy lifting, and it's proven to be far better than Apple Intelligence, giving them a leg up on Apple's mobile devices.
Bloomberg reports that Apple may have to comply with EU rulings and let users choose a voice assistant other than Siri on its operating systems. The impact may not be limited to iOS, as the language suggestions, it may also cover macOS and iPadOS.
This would mean that Apple device owners will be able to select a different assistant like Google's Gemini or OpenAI's ChatGPT as the default over Siri. However, like the access to third-party app stores on iOS, Apple may only do this for countries in the EU. No other market, including the US, would see its devices opening up to other assistants.
It's no secret that Apple Intelligence isn't good. Apple has had to go back to the drawing board, while Samsung has been able to position itself as providing the best mobile AI experience, courtesy of its own Galaxy AI features and what Gemini is helping out with.
Gemini on Apple devices would be welcomed by users, they would be able to experience superior AI functionality without having to wait for Apple Intelligence to get its act together. Anyone who may have switched over to Samsung for a better AI experience would then feel less inclined to switch, as long sa they're based in the EU.
