Amazon has revealed that it is expanding its drone delivery system for more product types in the USA. Since smartphones are now covered under the system, you can get Samsung Galaxy smartphones delivered to your doorstep via a drone in just 60 minutes.
Amazon's drone delivery service in the USA can now deliver smartphones from Apple and Samsung. If you reside in a location that is covered by the company's drone delivery system, you can get a Galaxy smartphone delivered to your doorstep in 60 minutes or less. However, the service isn't free, and costs $4.99 extra per delivery.
The other types of products that are eligible for drone delivery include AirPods, AirTags, Alpha Grillers Instant Read food thermometers, and Ring-branded doorbells. Amazon says there are now 60,000 items that are eligible for drone delivery. All the items in your cart should weigh under 5 pounds (2.27kg) in total or the delivery can't happen via a drone.
Amazon says you need to confirm where you want your product, and the spots can be either your driveway or your yard. You can select the delivery spot via a maps interface in Amazon's app. Once you select a spot, Amazon will remember it for your next orders. Deliveries can't happen in bad weather conditions, such as rains or heavy winds. The delivery doesn't happen unless the delivery spot is clear of cars, people, and pets.
The company said it took over two years to build this new delivery system, as it had to use a digital map into the drone's computer with eligible addresses. This allows the system to determine how long it will take for the delivery to happen at any particular eligible location.
